RESOLUTION NO. RS2001-594

A resolution recognizing former Councilman Willis McCallister upon his service to the city and to the community.

WHEREAS, former Member of Council Willis McCallister was born in Metropolis, Illinois, January 29, 1924; and

WHEREAS, Mr. McCallister's career began in the U.S. Army serving in World War II, then teaching High School before retiring from the Metropolitan Fire Department as a Deputy Fire Marshal; and

WHEREAS, Mr. McCallister, a public servant of his community, was elected as a member of the Metropolitan Council in 1979, and subsequently was re-elected for five successive terms; and

WHEREAS, during his tenure in the council he was President Pro Tem, Chair of Budget & Finance, along with serving on the Federal Grants Review, Health, Hospitals & Social Services and Charter Revision Committee where he represented the people with integrity and dedication; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Willis McCallister, most recently was appointed to the Fire and Building Code Appeals Board; and

WHEREAS, not only is he a lifetime member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), but continues today to be a real active public servant in the community; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Willis McCallister gives of his time, talents and energy to the community to make it a great place to live, work, and worship; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize former Councilman Willis McCallister for his faithful, untiring service to not only the residents of his district, but to all people of the Metropolitan Government.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing former Councilman Willis McCallister upon his service to the city and to the community.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is hereby directed to prepare a hand-lettered scroll to be presented to Willis McCallister.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
