RESOLUTION NO. RS2001-593

A resolution recognizing Octavious Bates, Kirby Bryant, Tommy Lawrence, and Mario Newson for their outstanding act of heroism.

WHEREAS, on the morning of Monday, March 26, 2001, Octavious Bates, Kirby Bryant, Tommy Lawrence, and Mario Newson, while outside playing, noticed flames coming from an upstairs dwelling at 3323 Clifton Avenue; and

WHEREAS, realizing that help had not arrived, these young gentleman, without regard to their own safety, preceded without hesitation knocking on doors and alerting the occupants that the building was on fire; and

WHEREAS, during this ordeal, a 13-month old baby was tossed out of a 2nd floor window and caught safely below, thus enabling a family member to jump to safety, run back upstairs kick in the door and lead the others to safety; and

WHEREAS, due to their unselfish act of courage everyone got out of the apartment building safely; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize these young gentleman for their act of heroism.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Octavious Bates, Kirby Bryant, Tommy Lawrence, and Mario Newson for their outstanding act of heroism.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Staff Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to Octavious Bates, Kirby Bryant, Tommy Lawrence, and Mario Newsom.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
