RESOLUTION NO. RS2001-578

A resolution proclaiming the week of April 22nd through April 28th, 2001, to be Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee Crime Victims' Rights Week, and celebrates victims' voices as an important chorus for fairness and dignity.

WHEREAS, every individual, family and community in America has the right to live free from fear and harm; and

WHEREAS, there were still nearly 29 million people in America who were victimized by crime last year; and

WHEREAS, the year 2001 marks the 25th anniversary of the Victim Impact Statement, which helps our criminal and juvenile justice systems better understand the psychological, financial, and physical impact of crime on victims, and hold offenders accountable for their criminal and delinquent actions; and

WHEREAS, the citizens across America believe that Victims' Rights are Right of America and the millions of survivors of crime and their families deserve justice; and

WHEREAS, as a nation devoted to liberty and justice for all, America must increase its efforts to protect, restore, and expand crime victims' rights; and

WHEREAS, The Metropolitan Council is joining forces with victim service programs, criminal justice officials and concerned citizens throughout Nashville, Tennessee and America to observe National Crime Victims' Rights Week.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as proclaiming the week of April 22nd through April 28th, 2001, to be Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee Crime Victims' Rights Week, and celebrates victims' voices as an important chorus for fairness and dignity.

SECTION 2. That The Metropolitan County Council continue to reach for the stars of justice and compassion for crime victims as individuals, as communities, and as a nation dedicated to justice for all.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
