RESOLUTION NO. RS2001-558

A resolution proclaiming the week of April 1st through April 7th, as "Week of the Young Child" for 2001.

WHEREAS, the "Week of the Young Child" is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), first established in 1971, recognizing that the early childhood years (birth through age 8) lays the foundation for children's success in school and later life; and

WHEREAS, the theme for the "Week of the Young Child" for 2001 is Early Childhood: Where Our Future Begins; and

WHEREAS, the "Week of the Young Child" is a time to recognize that early childhood is where our future begins, and to recommit ourselves to ensuring that each and every child experiences the type of early environment that will promote early learning; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Diane Neighbors, began her career with young children as a Head Start and first grade teacher in North Carolina; and

WHEREAS, not only is Dr. Neighbors, President of the area Nashville Association For The Education of Young Children but currently serves as Public Policy Chair for the Tennessee Association For The Education of Young Children; and

WHEREAS, some of her specific accomplishments include serving as Regional Coordinator for Appalachian Regional Commission in western North Carolina to establish child care centers in rural counties, Kindergarten teacher and Summer camp coordinator in Metropolitan Boston, Director of Day Care Services for the Tennessee Department of Human Services, Child Care Consultant, Education Corporation of America, Director of The Children's House Montessori School and Director of Vanderbilt University Child Care Centers; and

WHEREAS, she has been appointed to the Governor's Task Force on Day Care and Tort Reform, Commission on Children and Youth and Metro Social Services Commission; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council joins forces with the Nashville Area Association for the Education of Young Children, Vanderbilt University, and Community Organizations throughout Nashville, Tennessee and America to observe "Week of the Young Child"; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize and commend Dr. Diane Neighbors for her work and interest in the well-being of our young children.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as proclaiming the week of April 1st through April 7th, as "Week of the Young Child" for 2001.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan County Council is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Dr. Diane Neighbors, on behalf of her work with the "Week of the Young Child".

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
