A resolution requesting Amtrak to restore passenger service to Nashville, Tennessee.

WHEREAS, Nashville is a major tourist destination for both Americans and foreigners; and

WHEREAS, Amtrak service will help reduce the pollution caused by automobiles and will help reduce congestion on the highways; and

WHEREAS, Amtrak is more fuel efficient than automobiles and will help reduce our dependence on foreign oil and our balance of payments; and

WHEREAS, having Amtrak service will increase the attractiveness of our area for future economic development; and

WHEREAS, Amtrak service will reduce the number of cars on the highways, thereby reducing the number of automobile accidents, thereby reducing lost wages and medical expenses, and it will take no new equipment to extend the Kentucky Cardinal to Nashville; and

WHEREAS, Nashville wants to be considered part of the designated national high-speed rail corridors by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting that Amtrak restore inter-city passenger service as soon as possible to Nashville, Tennessee.

SECTION 2. That the Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to Amtrak Train officials and to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

SECTION 3. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
