A resolution recognizing Nashville Predators Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations/General Manager David Poile as recipient of the 2001 "Lester Patrick Award".

WHEREAS, on Friday, March 23, 2001, David Poile, Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations/General Manager of the Nashville Predators, will be awarded with the NHL's prestigious "Lester Patrick Award" in New York; and

WHEREAS, one of hockey's highest honors, the Lester Patrick Award, is given annually for outstanding service to hockey in the United States; and

WHEREAS, the "Lester Patrick Award" was created in 1966 by the New York Rangers to honor Lester Patrick who has spent 50 years working in hockey as a player, long-time general manager and coach of the New York Rangers, owner and National Hockey League Governor; and

WHEREAS, David Poile began his interest in hockey by watching his father play in the NHL, beginning his professional career as an assistant with the former Atlanta Flames in 1972, and shortly after graduating from Northeastern University in Boston, were he was hockey team captain, leading scorer and most valuable player for two years, earning him a place in the University's Hall of Fame in 1977, was named assistant general manager of the Flames, served as manager and coordinator of the team farm club in Calgary, then spent 15 years as president/general manager of the Washington Capitals before joining the Predators in July of 1997; and

WHEREAS, some of his specific accomplishments include being a member of the NHL's general managers committee, instrumental in the League's adoption of the instant replay rule in 1991, awarded Inside Hockey's "Man of the Year" for his leadership, twice honored as The Sporting News NHL "Executive of the Year", help start up the expansion of the Predators in 1997, and also served as general manger of the 1998-99 U.S. National Team for the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championships; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize Nashville Predators Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations/General Manager David Poile on receiving this award.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Nashville Predators Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations/General Manager David Poile as recipient of the 2001 "Lester Patrick Award".

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Staff Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to David Poile.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
