RESOLUTION NO. RS2001-482

A resolution requesting the Tennessee Secretary of State, the State Coordinator of Elections, and the Tennessee General Assembly to undertake a comprehensive study to improve the conduct of elections statewide and to enact legislation which would provide for uniform voting methods.

WHEREAS, it has become apparent that confusion can result in elections because of uses of different types of voting methods, including different methods of voting, different types of voting machines and use of paper ballots; and

WHEREAS, a number of voters who thought they were registered properly in the State of Tennessee discovered on election day that they were not and, therefore, were denied the opportunity to cast their vote; and

WHEREAS, in order to have orderly elections and proper registration of voters in the State of Tennessee, the state needs to under take a comprehensive study to improve the condition of all elections and to provide uniform methods of voting throughout the State of Tennessee.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Tennessee Secretary of State, the State Coordinator of Elections, and the Tennessee General Assembly to undertake a comprehensive study to improve the conduct of elections statewide and to enact legislation which would provide for uniform voting methods.

SECTION 2. That the Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution the Secretary of State, the State Coordinator of Elections, and to each member of the Davidson County Delegation to the Tennessee General Assembly.

SECTION 3. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
