RESOLUTION NO. RS2001-465

A resolution honoring Vice Mayor David Scobey as recipient of the 2000 National Football Foundation Outstanding Official Award.

WHEREAS, David Scobey has been an outstanding businessman in Nashville for the past fifty years; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Scobey served with distinction in the Metropolitan Council for 32 years, eight as a Council Member-At-Large, and 24 as Vice Mayor; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Scobey played baseball and basketball at David Lipscomb College and Vanderbilt University in the 1940's; coached baseball, and was an assistant basketball coach at Vanderbilt from 1949-1955; and

WHEREAS, he began his officiating career at the high school level in 1945, moving to the Ohio Valley Conference, small college and junior college ranks in the early fifties; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Scobey was named both a basketball and football official in the Southeastern Conference in 1955; and

WHEREAS, he was a head linesman for 25 years and named the number one linesman in the Southeastern Conference eight different years; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Scobey officiated 12 major bowl games, including the Sugar, Cotton, Orange, Gator, Liberty, Bluebonnet and Sun Bowls; and

WHEREAS, after Mr. Scobey retired from officiating in 1980, he served the SEC an as observer of officials and also acted as rules interpreter for the TSSAA; and

WHEREAS, the National Football Foundation, that honors those who honor the game, who have revealed a love of country, concern for the fellow American and the nations youth, named David Scobey the recipient of the 2000 National Football Foundation Outstanding Official Award in recognition of his long and distinguished career both as an official and civic leader; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize Vice Mayor David Scobey in receiving this honor.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as honoring Vice Mayor David Scobey as recipient of the 2000 National Football Foundation Outstanding Official Award.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Staff Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Vice Mayor David Scobey.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
