RESOLUTION NO. RS2001-464

A resolution recognizing Happy Birdsong on winning the 2000 "Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson Award".

WHEREAS, on Saturday, December 9, 2000, Happy Birdsong, environmentalist, recycler and community activist, was presented with the 2000 "Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson Award" at the Keep America Beautiful, Inc.'s 47th National Conference in Washington, DC; and

WHEREAS, the "Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson Award" was first awarded in 1968, as a way to commemorate the former First Lady's many litter prevention and beautification activities and, therefore; this award has been given out annually to an outstanding woman for exceptional leadership in litter prevention and beautification activities; and

WHEREAS, since Happy Birdsong was a young girl she had a love for nature, and throughout her life has devoted many hours to the community, involving herself with supervising can-collection drives, replanting of trees, community cleanups, public land clearings at several area lakes, landscape public areas, maintain plant beds, and numerous other beautification projects; and

WHEREAS, she has faithfully served over seven years with the Metro Beautification & Environment Commission, the Nashville affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, over fifteen years with the Beautification Committee of the Madison Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the 9th District Beautification Committee for two years; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize Happy Birdsong on winning the 2000 "Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson Award" and her unselfishly giving of her time, talents, and energy and many hours of hard work, dedication and volunteerism throughout the Nashville community.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Happy Birdsong on winning the 2000 "Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson Award".

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Staff Office is directed to prepare a copy of the Resolution to be presented to Happy Birdsong.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
