RESOLUTION NO. RS2001-459

A resolution recognizing Glencliff High school physical education teacher and coach, Joel White, for his outstanding act of heroism.

WHEREAS, on Tuesday, November 28, 2000, physical education teacher and coach, Joel White, without thought for his own personal safety, risked his life for a swimmer in need; and

WHEREAS, Joel White, who has been teaching swim classes for over twenty-seven years, began his day just like any other day until 7:45 that morning when he rescued and saved Shantise Porter's life; and

WHEREAS, Joel White, without hesitation jumped in and pulled 12th-grade student Shantise Porter from the pool and performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation until emergency personnel responded; and

WHEREAS, due to swim instructor and coach White's heroism, courageousness, unselfishness, and loyalty, the young lady survived and is back in school; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize Joel White for his outstanding act of heroism.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Glencliff High school physical education teacher and coach, Joel White, for his outstanding act of heroism.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Staff is directed to prepare a copy of the Resolution to be presented to Coach Joel White.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
