RESOLUTION NO. RS2000-93

A resolution honoring Philip N. Bredesen.

WHEREAS, Philip N. Bredesen was elected Metropolitan County Mayor in 1991 and was re-elected in 1995, serving two terms as the chief executive for the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County; and

WHEREAS, through his dedicated leadership and vision, the area of the Metropolitan Government continued to grow and enjoy prosperity, as well as dramatic improvements in the quality of life; and

WHEREAS, under Mayor Bredesen’s leadership an aggressive program and construction of public schools was implemented and continues to provide new, more functional school facilities and provides for a reduction in the proliferation of portable classrooms; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Bredesen instituted and brought about, through the Board of Public Education, "core curriculum" education to improve the quality of education provided to the public school students; and

WHEREAS, through Mayor Bredesen’s leadership the public library system has been expanded, resulting in new and improved neighborhood libraries and the construction of a new main library in downtown Nashville; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Bredesen supported and was instrumental in the creation of a vast expansion of park property, including a greenway system to insure open space for the future of the Metropolitan Government; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Bredesen successfully brought Columbia/HCA’s world headquarters to Nashville, Tennessee, solidifying Nashville’s position as a major healthcare provider center, and consolidated General and Hubbard Hospitals to provide for a new facility for General Hospital’s operations; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Bredesen successfully negotiated bringing Nashville into prominence as a major sports city with the construction of the Nashville Arena, which resulted in the NHL’s Nashville Predators, and in construction of the Adelphia Coliseum and the relocation of the Tennessee Titans of the NFL; and

WHEREAS, under Mayor Bredesen’s leadership, both the Metro Police Department and the Metro Fire Department have become accredited, being the only major city in the United States with two accredited safety agencies; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Bredesen’s support of performing arts and visual arts, including the new Frist Center For The Visual Arts, have greatly improved the quality of life for the residents of the Metropolitan Government.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as honoring Philip N. Bredesen for his leadership and service as the Metropolitan County Mayor of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County from 1991 through 1999.

SECTION 2. That the Metropolitan Clerk is hereby directed to prepare a hand-lettered scroll to be presented to Philip N. Bredesen.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
