RESOLUTION NO. RS2000-448

A resolution requesting the Metropolitan Board of Public Education and the Metropolitan Planning Commission to consider undertaking a joint study on development and school needs as a result of such development.

WHEREAS, over the past several years the population of the area of the Metropolitan Government has grown dramatically; and

WHEREAS, some areas of the county, as a result of the expansion of infrastructure and available land sites, have seen a dramatic increase in both single-family and multi-family residential structures; and

WHEREAS, as a result of this increase in population in various areas of the county, classroom space in the public school system has not been able to keep pace, requiring school officials to utilize undesirable portables; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Board of Public Education and the Metropolitan Planning Commission conduct a study on the growth and classroom space needs in order for the Metropolitan Council to make appropriate legislative decisions related to cost factors on such growth.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Metropolitan Board of Public Education and the Metropolitan Planning Commission to consider undertaking a joint study on development and school needs as a result of such development with a focus on instituting alternative methods to fund these future needs.

SECTION 2. That the Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to each member of the Metropolitan Board of Public Education and each member of the Metropolitan Planning Commission.

SECTION 3. That the Metropolitan Board of Public Education and the Metropolitan Planning Commission are further requested to inform The Metropolitan Council on the feasibility and methods of instituting alternative funding proposals for legislative action in compliance with the request contained in Section 1 thereof, not later than sixty (60) days after the adoption of this Resolution, and to file an interim report on the information requested in Section 1 not later than June 1, 2001.

SECTION 4. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
