RESOLUTION NO. RS2000-379

A resolution proclaiming the week of October 15th through October 20th, 2000, as National Character Counts! Week.

WHEREAS, CHARACTER COUNTS! is a consortium of the nation’s largest and most influential educational and youth-serving organizations united in one overriding mission: strengthening the character of America’s youth; and

WHEREAS, Character Counts! is a national grass-roots effort to provide a common vocabulary among the varying facets of the community to raise awareness of the need for good character; and

WHEREAS, the goal is to provide guidance, training and ideas on how to integrate the Six Pillars of Character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship into school programs, organizations and communities; and

WHEREAS, Character Counts allows for a multitude of programs for educators, youth and community leaders to increase awareness through programs and events to build local consensus on core ethical values; and

WHEREAS, the approach is that in order to teach character we must also enforce it, advocate it, and model it; and

WHEREAS, Lipscomb University is spearheading a community effort to include members of government, public service, and business to encourage strong ethical behavior; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize October 15th through October 20th, 2000, as National Character Counts! Week and celebrate that character does, indeed, count.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as proclaiming the week of October 15th through October 20th, 2000, as National Character Counts! Week.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Staff Office is directed to prepare a copy of the Resolution to be presented to Dr. Stephen Flatt, President of David Lipscomb University and Dr. Mary D. Morris, Assistant Professor of Education.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
