RESOLUTION NO. RS2000-378

A resolution proclaiming October, 2000, as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

WHEREAS, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is dedicated to increasing the awareness of the importance of early detection of this disease; and

WHEREAS, the first National Breast Cancer Awareness Month program took place in October of 1985, as a week-long event to fill the information void in communication about this disease to the public; and

WHEREAS, part of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, National Mammography Day will be celebrated Friday, October 20, 2000. On this day, or throughout the month, radiologists provide discounted or free screening for mammograms; and

WHEREAS, the use of mammography has risen, but not enough women are still making this screening part of their healthcare routine; therefore, programs are now in place at the national, state and local levels to broaden access and improve screening, and funding for breast cancer research; and

WHEREAS, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, this cancer claims many lives, alone in Tennessee 3,800 new breast cancer cases are reported in 2000 already, along with 900 deaths, this is the second leading cause of cancer death; and

WHERAS, breast cancer is certainly a disease that merits the attention and resources of our communities; it is hoped that by designating October, 2000, as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the public will become more informed about the life-threatening consequences of this disease; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize October, 2000, as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and commend the organizers of this initiative on their efforts to promote Tennesseans’ health.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as proclaiming October, 2000, as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Staff Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution on behalf of National Breast Cancer Awareness.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
