RESOLUTION NO. RS2000-359
A resolution proclaiming September 30 through October 6, 2000, as "Walk Nashville Week" and October 4, 2000, as Walk Our Children to School Day.
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan County Council recognizes the importance of walking as a healthy activity for all people in our community, and the importance of making walking safer for all people, especially our children; and
WHEREAS, the first Walk Nashville Week took place in 1999 and was a resounding success; and
WHEREAS, Walk Nashville Week 2000 will include the following events:
Walk for Active Aging on September 30;
Titan Fans Walk to the Game on October 1;
Walk Our Children to School Day on October 4;
Walk Somewhere Day on October 6; and
WHEREAS, the Walk for Active Aging on September 30 is part of an international effort sponsored by the World Health Organization to inspire senior adults to be physically active in their golden years, which will include organized walks for all generations at the Vanderbilt University Dayani Center, senior citizen centers and area malls; and
WHEREAS, for the second year, a highlight of Walk Nashville Week will be "Titans Fans Walk to the Game" on October 1, 2000, when the Titans fans are encouraged to walk from their cars to the teams game that day at Adelphia Coliseum with the New York Giants; and
WHEREAS, Nashville schools are now in session and more children are walking to and from neighborhood schools -- many of them during the time of the day when many motorists are rushing to work or heading home after a tiring day at work; and
WHEREAS, children, parents and community leaders from sixteen schools in Nashville will join with participants worldwide for international "Walk Our Children to School Day" on October 4, 2000, to walk to school and evaluate pedestrian safety in their community; and
WHEREAS, as a finale for Walk Nashville Week 2000, Nashvillians are encouraged to walk to work, to lunch, around the neighborhood, or just a little farther from their cars on "Walk Somewhere Day," October 6; and
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council recognizes the following organizations and companies for their contributions to Walk Nashville Week:
Metropolitan Police Department;
Metropolitan Public School System;
Metropolitan Health Department;
Tennessee Governors Council on Physical Fitness;
Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation;
WRLT Lightning 100;
Tying Nashville Together;
Vanderbilt Ingram Cancer Center;
Kim Dayani Human Performance Center at Vanderbilt;
Coca-Cola;
Kroger;
Merck Pharmaceutical;
Pfizer, Inc.;
Bayer;
Saint Thomas Health Services;
Nashville Sports Council;
Tennessee Titans;
Nashville Predators;
Walk/Bike Nashville;
Allison & Beck Nutrition Consultants;
American Cancer Society;
American Heart Association; and
Tri-Star Sports Medicine.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council further hereby goes on record as proclaiming the week of September 30 through October 6, 2000, as "Walk Nashville Week" in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee.
SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council further proclaims October 4, 2000, "Walk Our Children to School Day" in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee.
SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
