RESOLUTION NO. RS2000-334

A resolution proclaiming October 2000 as Grand Ole Opry month.

WHEREAS, The Grand Ole Opry was given its name on the evening of November 28, 1925, by the "Solemn Old Judge," George D. Hay, broadcasting from Nashville on WSM Radio; and

WHEREAS, The Grand Ole Opry has become the longest-running live radio show in the world; and

WHEREAS, The Grand Ole Opry has preserved and nurtured a uniquely American art form, meanwhile making Nashville a mecca for music lovers from around the world, who have come to know and love our city as "Music City U.S.A."; and

WHEREAS, The Grand Ole Opry, now through radio, television, and the Internet, continues to allow all of America to share its own music and comedy, preserving the traditions established by Roy Acuff, Kitty Wells, Minnie Pearl, Ernest Tubb, and dozens of others; and

WHEREAS, a performance on the stage of Opry House continues to be the dream of every Country Music artist; and

WHEREAS, The Grand Ole Opry will celebrate its 75^th anniversary year with activities throughout the month of October 2000, highlighted by a star-studded weekend of performances on October 13 and 14, featuring the living legends of the Opry, including Garth Brooks, Vince Gill, Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Marty Stuart, Porter Wagoner, and the Opry’s newest member, Pam Tillis; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the residents and Government of Nashville and Davidson County should join in this celebration a local and international treasure by designating October 2000 as "Grand Ole Opry Month" in Nashville and Davidson County; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as proclaiming October 2000 as Grand Ole Opry Month.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Staff Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution on behalf of Grand Ole Opry Month.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
