Resolution No. RS2000-330

A resolution honoring the Cleveland Street Baptist Church on the occasion of its 111th anniversary.

WHEREAS, the week of August 28th through September 3rd, the members of Cleveland Street Baptist Church celebrated their 111th anniversary of the founding of the church; and

WHEREAS, to celebrate this joyous occasion the church will have a special Homecoming and Mortgage Burning Service on Sunday, September 3, 2000; and

WHEREAS, when Cleveland Street Baptist Church was founded it had forty-five members; and

WHEREAS, Cleveland Street Baptist Church was founded in 1889, a small mission known as North Street Baptist Church, and was started by the Reverend William Bailey in a double tenement house; and

WHREAS, in December of 1979, Reverend Alexander assumed pastoral duties, and during his tenure, he has been instrumental in building a new edifice, developing many programs and opportunities for one to learn the teachings of Christ; and

WHEREAS, some highlights of the church’s long and glorious history include: the original church in the early 1920’s was destroyed which forced them to relocate under the Cleveland Street viaduct, the construction of the new Cleveland Street Baptist Church in 1929; the organization of Boy and Girl Scout Troops; the Nurse’s Guild and Beautifying Club; the acquisition of additional land for a paved parking area; plans for building a new edifice accomplished in the 1970’s; the organization of the first Junior Choir in 1980; and the service of the many wonderful pastors who have led the church over the years; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize the Cleveland Street Baptist Church during their 111th anniversary.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as honoring the Cleveland Street Baptist Church on the occasion of its 111th anniversary.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Staff Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Reverend James Alexander on behalf of the Cleveland Street Baptist Church.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
