Resolution No. RS2000-322

A resolution recognizing the retirement of the following Board of Public Education members Deirdre Macnab, Murray Philip, Vic Varallo, Chairwoman Betsy Walkup and the late Charles Gann.

WHEREAS, Deirdre Macnab, Murray Philip, Vic Varallo, chairwoman Betsy Walkup and the late Charles Gann served Davidson County with distinction as valuable and respected members of the Davidson County Board of Public Education; and

WHEREAS, as members of the school board, their actions consistently reflected their sincere devotion to ensuring quality education for all of the children of Davidson County; and

WHEREAS, while helping to steer the Davidson County School system through a period of growth these members focused on improving curriculum, staff, and organizations; and

WHEREAS, with the help and leadership of these outstanding board members each served their district to its full potential; and

WHEREAS, members of the school board having had a profound effect of confronting difficult issues and causing much needed improvements to our schools; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Macnab was elected to the school board in 1998 to represent District 8 serving two years; Mr. Philips was elected to the school board on August 1, 1996 to represent District 1 serving four years; Mr. Varallo, served for two months completing the term of the late Charles Gann, who respectfully served eighteen years in District 4; and Betsy Walkup who served six years in District 9, and in September of 1998, was elected chairwoman of the Metropolitan Board of Public Education serving two years; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize each board member who gave up their time to make education a top priority in Davison County.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the retirement of the following Board of Public Education members Deirdre Macnab, Murray Philip, Vic Varallo, Chairwoman Betsy Walkup and the late Charles Gann.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Staff Office is directed to prepare a certificate to be presented to Deirdre Macnab, Murray Philip, Vic Varallo, Chairwoman Betsy Walkup and to the family of the late Charles Gann.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
