Resolution No. RS2000-319

A resolution memorializing the late Lafayette "Fate" C. Thomas.

WHEREAS, Lafayette C. Thomas known to many as "Fate" Thomas was born September 23, 1926, in south Nashville; and

WHEREAS, during his lifetime, Mr. Thomas was professional, courteous, dedicated, and compassionate in his dealings with his colleagues and the citizens of Davidson County, a true public servant; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Thomas’ career included working part-time in the plumbing business while still attending school, for the railroad as a fireman, served in the Army, opened his own restaurant called Fate Thomas’ Barbecue, ran for a seat for the State Legislator and worked for the city of Nashville in the Criminal Court clerk’s office; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Thomas served with great distinction and effectiveness as the Davidson County’s Sheriff from 1972-1990; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Thomas had a passion for politics and understood the system and how it works; and

WHEREAS, he enjoyed serving up his famous barbecue at the annual Sure Shot Rabbit Hunters Association dinner and other fund raising dinners and events; and

WHEREAS, his passing leaves a hole in the lives of his family, his church, the community and government; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council express their condolences to the family and friends of Lafayette "Fate" C. Thomas, and express sincere regret at his passing.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as memorializing the late Lafayette "Fate" C. Thomas.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Staff Office is directed to prepare a printed scroll to be presented to the family of Lafayette "Fate" C. Thomas.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
