RESOLUTION NO. RS2000-230

A resolution requesting the Metropolitan Police Department to report to the Metropolitan Council on the availability and use of video cameras in Metro police vehicles, and the cost to equip all police vehicles with such equipment.

WHEREAS, some Metro police vehicles are equipped with video cameras which record certain activities involved in traffic stops or criminal activity, which are a unique and effective tool in the prosecution of criminals and in prevention of crime; and

WHEREAS, such equipment, when utilized, could also protect police officers from unjust complaints concerning their use of force in making arrests, and would help restore public confidence in the Metro Police Department.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Mayor and the Metropolitan Police Department to report to the Metro Council on the availability and use of video cameras in Metro police vehicles, and the cost to equip all police vehicles with such equipment, in an effort to protect police officers and to help restore public confidence in the Metro Police Department.

SECTION 2. That the Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to the Mayor and to the Chief of Police.

SECTION 3. That the Mayor and the Chief of Police are further requested to inform The Metropolitan Council of the feasibility and/or the actions taken in compliance with the request contained in Section 1 hereof, not later than sixty (60) days after the adoption of this Resolution.

SECTION 4. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
