RESOLUTION NO. RS2000-218
A resolution proclaiming May 22-28, 2000, as Wireless Safety Week in Nashville.
WHEREAS, the week of May 22-28, 2000, will be recognized nationally as Wireless Safety Week which encourages wireless telephone companies operating within The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County to continue to educate their customers on the responsible use of wireless telephones while operating a motor vehicle; and
WHEREAS, it is the desire of the Metropolitan County Council to ensure that operators of motor vehicles on the streets, roads, and highways within The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County are as safe as possible; and
WHEREAS, there are an increasing number of distractions presenting themselves to operators of motor vehicles, including eating, drinking, manipulating audio devices, using wireless telephones, attending to passengers, and the like; and
WHEREAS, it is the desire of the Metropolitan County Council that operators of motor vehicles be reminded that their first priority while operating a motor vehicle is concentration on the act of driving itself; and
WHEREAS, every day the use of wireless phones in emergency situations saves lives, and wireless telephones benefit not only the customers of wireless telecommunication but also the general public and emergency personnel.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
SECTION 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as proclaiming May 22-28, 2000, as Wireless Telephone Safety Week in Nashville.
SECTION 2. The Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as encouraging providers of wireless telephone service to continue to educate customers on the safe and responsible use of wireless phones while driving. Providers of wireless telephone products and services should continue to educate customers about the safe and responsible use of wireless phones while operating a motor vehicle, including providing information to new customers, periodic reminders to existing customers, and general reminders in advertising and promotional materials. Providers of wireless telephone products and services should educate customers on their options for using their wireless phone while operating a motor vehicle.
SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
