RESOLUTION NO. RS2000-214
A resolution requesting the Tennessee General Assembly to adopt necessary measures to permit a constitutional referendum on a state lottery to provide funds for education.
WHEREAS, the Tennessee State Constitution presently prohibits lotteries in the State of Tennessee; and
WHEREAS, several states have amended their constitution so as to permit a state-operated lottery, using net revenues derived from such lotteries to support both elementary and secondary public education, and post secondary education; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the legislature enact the necessary legislation to call for a public referendum amending the constitution to allow such a state lottery in the State of Tennessee.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Tennessee General Assembly to adopt necessary measures to permit a constitutional referendum on a state lottery to provide funds for education.
SECTION 2. That the Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to the each member of the Davidson County Delegation to the Tennessee General Assembly.
SECTION 3. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
