RESOLUTION NO. RS2000-209

A resolution recognizing the Homework Hotline on celebrating it’s 10th Anniversary.

WHEREAS, the Homework Hotline staffed by twenty-five Metro teachers has provided a very valuable service to Nashville students and parents over the past ten years, this year alone answering nearly 16,000 calls; and

WHEREAS, these volunteer Metro teachers answer calls from not only struggling students, but all students who need one-on-one help with confusing concepts in any of their homework subjects who otherwise would not get the help they need to achieve; and

WHEREAS, News Channel Five, media partner since 1991, with the leadership of May Dean Eberling, teamed up with the Metro School Board and Metro Nashville Education Association (MNEA) to inaugurate this helpline; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Eberling helped to bring in corporate partners such as Kroger a contributor to the Hotline since 1990, BellSouth a major contributor who recently arranged for a new high-tech phone system from Nortel to be donated along with additional funding from the Birdgestone/Firestone Trust Fund, Union Planters Bank, the Frist Foundation, Landmark Communications, Metro Nashville Education Association, The Memorial Foundation, Nashville Business Journal, Nissan Motor Manufacturing Corp., USA, Nortel Networks, Whirlpool Foundation and the Williamson County Public Schools who have all contributed tens of thousands of dollars in financial support for operating expenses over the years; and

WHEREAS, a recent Nashville Tennessean editorial teamed the Homework Hotline "a rousing success" and the Nashville Scene weekly said the Hotline is the "Best Friend to Metro School Kids"; and

WHEREAS, Metro Public Schools provide teachers and operating space at the Cohn Adult Learning Center; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize and extend its appreciation and commendations to all those who are involved in supporting and volunteering there time to this outstanding public/private partnership.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the Homework Hotline on celebrating it’s 10th Anniversary.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Staff Office is directed to prepare a certificate to be presented to Wendy Kurland on behalf of all involved with the Homework Hotline project.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
