RESOLUTION NO. RS2000-198

A resolution honoring Dr. Dorothy L. Brown.

WHEREAS, four words describe Dr. Dorothy L. Brown first, black, female, and surgeon - speak for themselves; and

WHEREAS, guided by a clear vision of determination, a strong will to succeed, and uncommon enthusiasm and intelligence, Dr. Dorothy L. Brown has overcome obstacles and detours to achieve great success in her careers in medicine and politics; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Dorothy L. Brown, was the first black woman surgeon in the South and the first black woman to serve in the Tennessee Legislature; and

WHEREAS, her contributions in the field of medicine and surgery are well known, as well as her stands on matters of politics, both popular and unpopular; and

WHEREAS, in addition to receiving numerous awards and honors for her roles in both medicine and politics, she has wrote several publications, had a documentary of her life made into film, and is a member of several professional organizations; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council honor Dr. Dorothy L. Brown on her many outstanding achievements throughout her career.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as honoring Dorothy L. Brown.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Staff Office is directed to prepare a certificate to be presented to Dr. Dorothy L. Brown.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
