SUBSTITUTE RESOLUTION NO. SR99-1570

A substitute resolution requesting the Metropolitan board of public education to use its significant influence to work with the Metropolitan Police Department to have police officers present in each middle and high school in the public education system next school year.

WHEREAS, it is the understanding of the Metropolitan Council that it is the intent of the Metropolitan board of public education to discontinue the practice of police officers being present in middle and high schools of the public education system; and

WHEREAS, the presence of these officers has reduced school violence within the area of the Metropolitan Government; and

WHEREAS, unfortunately, such violence in public schools continue throughout the nation; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and appropriate that this program be continued for the public safety of public school children.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Metropolitan board of public education to use its significant influence to work with the Metropolitan Police Department to have police officers present in each middle and high school in the public education system next school year.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to each member of the board of Metropolitan board of public education and to the director of schools.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
