RESOLUTION NO. R99-1541

A resolution requesting Metropolitan the Board of Education to evaluate the feasibility of establishing a language magnet school as an immersion program at the elementary or junior high school level.

WHEREAS, fluency in multiple languages is a valuable skill in an increasingly global economy, and;

WHEREAS, learning a second language has been shown to improve language skills in one’s first language, an

WHEREAS, Nashville’s growing international population and Metro Schools growing ESL population create the opportunity for native English speakers to learn a second language from native speakers at the same time foreign-born students have the opportunity to learn English from native English speakers, and;

WHEREAS, research show that younger students are generally more adept at learning a second language than older students, and;

WHEREAS, the ad hoc International Committee recommended that the school board should evaluate the feasibility of establishing a language magnet school for both native English speaking students and non-native English speaking students, and;

WHEREAS, other cities and states have established successful language immersion programs that could be used as models.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. The Metropolitan Council goes on record as requesting that the Metropolitan Board of Education evaluate the feasibility of establishing a language magnet school as an immersion program at the elementary and or junior high school level.

SECTION 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.

AMENDMENT NO. 1

TO

RESOLUTION NO. R99-1541

Mr. President:

I move to amend Resolution No. R99-1541 by amending the Caption and Section 1 thereof by deleting the phrase "junior high school" and substituting in lieu thereof the phrase "middle school".
