RESOLUTION NO. R99-1539

A resolution requesting the Metropolitan Board of Public Education to implement a mandatory, on-going character education program for all public school students.

WHEREAS, as a result of incidents similar to the violent incidents that have occurred in Kentucky, Arkansas, and now Littleton, Colorado, there is apparent that there is a need to address the issue of character in our educational system; and

WHEREAS, in order to improve character and to identify possible character traits, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Board of Education provide a mandatory, on-going character education program in our public school system in grades Kindergarten through 12.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Metropolitan Board of Public Education to implement a mandatory, on-going character education program for all public school students.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to the members of the Board of Public Education and to the Director of Schools.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
