RESOLUTION NO. R99-1525

A resolution honoring Asa Scobey Rogers, Jr.

WHEREAS, On September 2, 1998, Scobey Rogers, Jr., was taken from our midst at the age of 80, and he lived his life by the Scout Oath and Law and devoted himself to the cause of Scouting in Middle Tennessee; and

WHEREAS, overcoming considerable physical impairments of cerebral palsy, Scobey graduated from the Vanderbilt University School of Engineering and build a successful career as a skilled and creative mechanical engineer; and

WHEREAS, Scobey, himself an Eagle Scout, served Scouting in Middle Tennessee as a registered volunteer for over 65 continuous years, and after serving as Scoutmaster of Troop 9, in 1955 Scobey founded Troop 121 at Woodmont Baptist Church in Nashville and served as Scoutmaster of that unit for 34 years. Under his leadership, Troop 121 flourished and grew into one of the largest and most respected Scouting units in Middle Tennessee. During Scobey’s tenure as Scoutmaster, 159 boys from Troop 121 earned the Eagle Scout Award; and

WHEREAS, Scobey served faithfully as a member of the Executive Board of the Middle Tennessee Council for many years; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the cause of Scouting, Scobey received numerous awards and honors, including the Long Rifle Award, the highest award given by a Council for volunteer service; the Good Shepherd Award, awarded to Baptist laymen in recognition of outstanding service to youth through Scouting; the Silver Good Shepherd Award, given to recipients of the Good Shepherd Award who have at least 50 years registered service in Scouting; and the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award, given by the National Council to those few who earn the Eagle Scout Award and thereafter go on to the highest accomplishments, both in their professions and in service to their communities.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Asa Scobey Rogers, Jr., for his outstanding service and contributions to Scouting and to the Nashville and Davidson County area.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Staff Office is directed to prepare a certificate to be presented to the family of Asa Scobey Rogers, Jr.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
