RESOLUTION NO. R99-1523

A resolution recognizing May 2-8, 1999, as Nashville Tourism Week.

WHEREAS, the travel and tourism industry supports the vital interest of Nashville and the United States, contributing to our employment, economic prosperity, international trade and relations, peace, understanding, and goodwill; and

WHEREAS, travel and tourism ranks as one of Nashville's largest industries in terms of revenues generated; and

WHEREAS, 9.5 million travelers visiting Nashville contributed $2.2 billion to the economy in 1998; and

WHEREAS, those travelers provided jobs for 45,000 citizens in Nashville

WHEREAS, travel and tourism provides employment for more young people, women, and minorities than any other industry in Nashville; and

WHEREAS, as people throughout the world become aware of the outstanding cultural and recreational resources available in Nashville, travel and tourism will become an increasingly important aspect in the lives of our citizens; and

WHEREAS, given these laudable contributions to the economic, social and cultural well-being of the citizens of Nashville, it is fitting that we recognize the importance of travel and tourism.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY.

SECTION 1. The Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as recognizing May 2-8, 1999, as Nashville Tourism Week.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Staff is requested to prepare a certificate in recognition of Nashville Tourism Week.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its passage, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
