RESOLUTION NO. R99-1505

A resolution proclaiming May 1, 1999, as "Nashville Youth and Fitness Day with Peyton Manning".

WHEREAS, children in the United States are less fit than they were a generation ago; and

WHEREAS, the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey found that as many as one in five children between the ages of 6 and 17 are overweight; and

WHEREAS, physical activity helps build and maintain healthy bones and joints, and has other health benefits, including:

WHEREAS, Healthy Nashville, the YMCA, the Beef Council, Kroger, and Luby’s Cafeteria have joined together in an effort to encourage physical activity, good eating habits, and community responsibility; and

WHEREAS, the efforts of these organizations will be highlighted by "Nashville Youth and Fitness Day with Peyton Manning" to be held on May 1, 1999, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Shelby Bottoms Greenway; and

WHEREAS, former University of Tennessee and current Indianapolis Colts football star Peyton Manning has graciously agreed to host the event; and

WHEREAS, Nashville’s youth participating in the event will have an opportunity to hear Mr. Manning speak, receive a signed poster, and participate in numerous other physical activities, including a fitness walk with Mr. Manning.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as proclaiming May 1, 1999, as "Nashville Youth and Fitness Day with Peyton Manning".

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council further commends Peyton Manning and all organizations involved in Nashville Youth and Fitness Day with Peyton Manning for their efforts to encourage Nashville youth to enjoy the benefits of physical activity and healthy eating habits.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
