RESOLUTION NO. R99-1440

A Resolution honoring Bob Johnson upon his retirement as Executive Director of the PENCIL Foundation.

WHEREAS, Bob Johnson served as Executive Director of the PENCIL Foundation from 1983 to 1999; and

WHEREAS, under Mr. Johnson's leadership, PENCIL grew from three to seven programs and created programs such as the Frist Foundation Grants for Teachers and Principals, Job Skills Training and Employment Program housed at Cohn Adult Learning Center, Nortel Camp Discovery, Saint Thomas Science Scholars, and Student Writers Showcase; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson has worked closely with all community organizations in an effort to support Metro Schools; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson is a dedicated leader who quoted the first year at PENCIL, "School is Fun; education is exciting; teachers, principals and administrators are dedicated; and schoolhouses are the most exhilarating and uplifting buildings one can visit in this city"; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council honor Bob Johnson for his outstanding contributions to the PENCIL Foundation and for his dedicated service to the citizens of Nashville.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1 The Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as honoring Bob Johnson upon his retirement as Executive Director of the PENCIL Foundation.

SECTION 2. The Council Staff Office is requested to prepare a certificate to be presented to Bob Johnson.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
