ADOPTED 02/16/1999

RESOLUTION NO. R99-1425

A resolution requesting the Metropolitan Board of Public Education to consider the adoption of a dress code for students in the public school system.

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan County Council has previously adopted a request that a dress code be adopted for the public school system; and

WHEREAS, on June 29, 1995, the Director of Schools informed the Metropolitan Council that parents and teachers groups had visited Memphis, Tennessee, where a voluntary dress code is operating successfully in their school district; and

WHEREAS, adoption of a dress code removes peer pressure among students and lessens the economic burden of parents in the purchasing of designer and brand name clothing and shoes; and

WHEREAS, adoption of a dress code removes the opportunity for certain students to wear "colors" of certain undesirable groups and gangs that promote violence; and

WHEREAS, such a policy should be uniformly enforced in the Metropolitan public school system.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting Dr. Bill Wise, administrative staff, and the Metropolitan Board of Public Education to consider the adoption of a dress code for students in the public school system.

SECTION 2. That Dr. Bill Wise, administrative staff, and the Metropolitan Board of Public Education are further requested to inform the Metropolitan Council of the feasibility of and/or actions taken in compliance with the request contained in Section One hereof, not later than thirty (30) days after the adoption of this Resolution.

SECTION 3. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to the Director of Schools and to each member of the Metropolitan Board of Public Education.

SECTION 4. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
