RESOLUTION NO. R99-1386

A resolution honoring the University of Tennessee Football Team on winning the Fiesta Bowl and as National Football Champions. 

WHEREAS, the entire State of Tennessee was proud and honored this January 4, 1999, as the University of Tennessee Volunteers Football Team won the National Championship by defeating the national powerhouse Florida State Seminoles Football Team in the Fiesta Bowl held in Tempe, Arizona; and

WHEREAS, Head Coach Phillip Fulmer and the Tennessee Vols completed an improbable, undefeated 13-game season and sealed the school’s first National Football Championship in almost a half century with a 23-16 Fiesta Bowl victory; and

WHEREAS, the Tennessee Vols stormed through the regular season with a 12-0 record and achieved a second straight Southeastern Conference title; and

WHEREAS, in addition to receiving the Fiesta Bowl Trophy, the Tennessee Vols received the Sears National Championship Trophy; and

WHEREAS, by their outstanding performance, the Tennessee Vols players and coaches have brought recognition to the State of Tennessee and the Metropolitan Government area for not only their athletic abilities, but for their exceptional team play, their sportsmanship, and their dedication; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize the University of Tennessee Volunteers Football Team as being the best team in the country and honor them for winning the National Championship.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as honoring Head Coach Phillip Fulmer and the University of Tennessee Volunteers Football Team on winning the National Championship.

SECTION 2. That the Metropolitan Council Staff Office is hereby directed to prepare a printed scroll to be presented to the Coach Phillip Fulmer and the Tennessee Volunteers Football Team.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
