RESOLUTION NO. R99-1376

A resolution honoring the Remote Area Medical Team (RAM), the Davidson County Academy of Veterinary Medicine, and the Southern Alliance For Animal Welfare.

WHEREAS, in the continuing battle against the Number One enemy of pets – over population – three organizations are making a difference in Davidson County; and

WHEREAS, the Remote Area Medical Team (RAM) consists of a group of veterinarians working outside their professional sphere at the University of Tennessee School of Veterinary Medicine; and

WHEREAS, the members of the RAM Team came to Nashville to assist not only the Southern Alliance for Animal Welfare, but also to assist the Davidson County Academy of Veterinary Medicine in fighting the war against the Number One killer of our pets – over population; and

WHEREAS, animal care and control costs should be a concern to all citizens, as it translates into a tax dollar drain for the entire city; and

WHEREAS, for those working on behalf of animals, it translates into a tragedy that has gone on for much too long, and we have the tools to fight it and we have the surgical knowledge along with the tools to solve the root problem; and

WHEREAS, the members of the RAM Team, the Davidson County Academy of Veterinary Medicine, and the Southern Alliance for Animal Welfare have all come together to fight this war; and

WHEREAS, help is needed from the Metropolitan Council of Nashville and Davidson County and from all citizens of Davidson County, to support the Spay/Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP) which provides free services to help prevent over population of our pets; and

WHEREAS, in return for their support, the Metropolitan Council and the citizens of Davidson County receive benefits such as fewer dog bites and attacks, fewer free-roaming and stray animals and the neighborhood havoc they can cause, the reduction in the spread of rabies, and a more humane Nashville.

SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as honoring the Remote Area Medical Team (RAM), the Davidson County Academy of Veterinary Medicine, and the Southern Alliance For Animal Welfare for their combined contributions to the citizens of Nashville and Davidson County through their services to the Spay/Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP), of which there are two clinics planned for 1999.
