RESOLUTION NO. R99-1374
A resolution recognizing the Horse Mounted Patrol Unit of the Metropolitan Police Department.
WHEREAS, the six members of the Metro Police Departments Horse Mounted Patrol Unit began training in May 1998 and commenced active duty in September 1998; and
WHEREAS, the unit is led by Sergeant James D. Harber, who is the Commander and the Instructor/Trainer of the Horse Mounted Patrol, and the other members of the unit are Officer Theresa Gross, Officer Benny Storie, Officer Chris Hodges, Officer Ronald Sloan, and Officer Alfred Murphy; and
WHEREAS, the unit is equipped with beautiful, 3-4 year old Tennessee Walking Horses, and they are trained and stabled at Ellington Agricultural Center; and
WHEREAS, during its short existence, the Horse Mounted Patrol Unit has worked numerous events, including representing the city at the Walking Horse National Celebration in Shelbyville, Tennessee; the Nashville Christmas Parade; the Donelson Christmas Parade; the Music City Bowl; and all Tennessee Oilers football games; and
WHEREAS, the unit competed in the National Horse Mounted Police Training and Competition in Lexington, Kentucky, and out of 126 horses in competition, Metros unit had four horses in the top 20, and one horse in the top eight; and
WHEREAS, the unit also visits Metro schools and Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops where it conducts demonstrations and provides information on the horses to the youth; and
WHEREAS, the Horse Mounted Patrol Unit is highly visible during its patrol, and as such is a valuable representative of our city and provides valuable information, directions, and city maps to tourists who visit Nashville; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize the Horse Mounted Patrol Unit for their contributions to the citizens of Nashville and Davidson County.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the Horse Mounted Patrol Unit of the Metro Police Department for their contributions to the citizens of Nashville and Davidson County.
SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Staff Office is directed to prepare certificates to be presented to each member of the Horse Mounted Patrol Unit.
SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
