RESOLUTION NO. R98-1357

A resolution requesting the Davidson County Delegation to the Tennessee General Assembly to introduce and have enacted a statute that would make it illegal for minors to purchase or possess tobacco products.

WHEREAS, it is illegal in the State of Tennessee to sell tobacco products to persons under the age of eighteen years; and

WHEREAS, it is, however, legal for such minors to purchase or possess tobacco products; and

WHEREAS, to effectively discourage smoking and use of tobacco products by minors, it should be unlawful for minors to purchase or possess tobacco products; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that such a law be enacted.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Davidson County Delegation to the Tennessee General Assembly to introduce and have enacted a statute which makes it illegal for minors to purchase or possess tobacco products.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this legislation to each member of the Davidson County Delegation.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
