RESOLUTION NO. R98-1320

A resolution recognizing the Metro Nashville and Davidson County Public School system and the Country Music Hall of Fame for their "Hands Across The Row" partnership.

WHEREAS, the Metro Nashville and Davidson County Public School system and the Country Music Hall of Fame have recently entered into a partnership to connect Nashville’s music community directly to area public schools by the establishment of "Hands Across The Row"; and

WHEREAS, Hands Across The Row is a music education initiative presented by the Hall of Fame’s education department at the invitation of Metro Schools Director Bill Wise, and is being developed in close collaboration between Metro teachers, music industry professionals, and Hall of Fame staff; and

WHEREAS, Metro teachers and Hall of Fame staff will work together to identify resources within the music community and to determine how those resources can be best used in public schools; and

WHEREAS, the Metro School Board and the Hall of Fame are in the process of forming an advisory board composed of representatives of these groups, as well as community leaders, and a celebrity chairperson will be chosen to help focus music industry attention on the program, to communicate with the public, and to provide assistance with funding efforts; and

WHEREAS, the Hands Across The Row partnership is the first of its kind between the school system and an entire industry, although the music industry has a long history of supporting arts program in Metro schools, from the Grammy in the Schools program to the W.O. Smith Music School; and

WHEREAS, complete plans for Hands Across The Row will be developed during the current 1998-99 school year, and funding for the initiative will be jointly developed by the Board of Education and the Country Music Hall of Fame; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize the Board of Education and the Country Music Hall of Fame for their joint efforts in initiating the Hands Across The Row partnership.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the Davidson County Public School system and the Country Music Hall of Fame for their joint efforts in initiating the "Hands Across The Row" partnership.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Staff Office is directed to prepare certificates to be presented to Metro Schools Director Bill Wise and to Mr. Kyle Young, Acting Director of the Country Music Hall of Fame.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its passage, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
