RESOLUTION NO. R98-1319

A resolution honoring Jorn Hall upon his retirement from service with the Metro Schools Homework Hotline.

WHEREAS, Jorn Hall will retire after having served more than nine years as Director of the Metro Schools Homework Hotline; and

WHEREAS, Homework Hotline is a group of 23 Metro school teachers who answer calls nightly from struggling students who need help with any of their homework subjects; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hall, a native of Gloversville, New York, put himself through college and graduated with a degree in Cinematography from Penn State; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hall, who came to Nashville in 1982 to pursue a career, in the film and video industry, joined the staff of Community Access Television where he first held the position of Technical Director and later was appointed Executive Director; and

WHEREAS, in 1990 Mr. Hall became the first Director of the Homework Hotline, and in the eight and one-half years since, he and the other Hotline teachers have responded to more than 107,000 calls for help; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hall was instrumental in helping to build confidence in students who were failing and could not keep up with their studies – whether because of drugs, pregnancy or violence, and because of him and the other Hotline teachers, tens of thousands of failing students have been helped who wanted to do well, but just needed that extra attention; and

WHEREAS, as Director, Mr. Hall worked hard to raise money, train teachers, find space at Cohn Adult Learning Center, and secure donated telephone equipment to ensure that the work of the Homework Hotline could go on; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council honor Jorn Hall upon his retirement and for his outstanding contributions to the Homework Hotline teachers, the Board of Directors, and countless students of Nashville and Davidson County.

 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Mr. Jorn Hall upon his retirement from service with the Homework Hotline and commending him for his outstanding contributions to the students of Nashville and Davidson County.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Staff is directed to prepare a certificate to be presented to Mr. Jorn Hall.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its passage, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
