RESOLUTION NO. R98-1318

A resolution honoring Jack Vaughn upon his retirement from service with Gaylord Entertainment Company.

WHEREAS, on December 31, 1998, Jack Vaughn will retire after having served more than 23 years in various positions with Gaylord Entertainment Company and its predecessor companies; and

WHEREAS, Gaylord Entertainment is a diversified entertainment and communications company operating in three business segments – hospitality and attractions; broadcasting and music; and cable networks; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Vaughn began his illustrious career in the hospitality industry in 1959 when he started at the Hotel Benson in Portland, Oregon, and thereafter held various positions with Westin Hotels & Resorts, including serving as General Manager of the Continental Plaza Hotel in Chicago, Illinois, and the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles, California, and

WHEREAS, Mr. Vaughn joined Gaylord in 1975 as General Manager of the Opryland Hotel – even though construction had not yet begun on the first 600-room phase of the property which, since its opening in 1977, has been expanded three times to its present size of 2,883 rooms and 600,000 square feet; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Vaughn is one of the most recognized leaders in the hospitality and attractions industry, and upon his retirement held the responsibility of Chairman of the Opryland Lodging Group, where his duties included establishing other Opryland Hotel properties in markets across the United States; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Vaughn was instrumental in helping to build Nashville’s renowned Opryland Hotel, as throughout the hotel’s growth he has been an industry advocate for incorporating convention space inside of hotels, and for that leadership he was named to the Convention Liaison Council’s Hall of Leaders in 1988; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Vaughn has been active in numerous civic and industry organizations, including president of the Middle Tennessee Council of the Boy Scouts of America, a board member for the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Congressional Travel & Tourism Caucus Advisory Council, executive committee member of the Nashville Rotary Club, chairman of the Metropolitan Convention Center Commission, a board member of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, and a director of the American Hotel & Motel Association Educational Institute; and

WHEREAS, in 1990 Mr. Vaughn was named "Independent Hotelier of the World" by Hotels Magazine, and was named "Resort Executive of the Year", and in addition he has received the Arthur Landstreet Award from the Educational Institute, the Lawson Odde Award from the American Hotel & Motel Association, and in 1995 he received the American Heart Association’s Heart of the Community Award; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize Jack Vaughn upon his retirement and for his outstanding contributions to the citizens of Nashville and Davidson County and to the state of Tennessee.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Mr. Jack Vaughn upon his retirement from service with Gaylord Entertainment and commending him for his outstanding contributions to the citizens of Nashville and Davidson County and to the state of Tennessee.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Staff is directed to prepare a printed scroll to be presented to Mr. Jack Vaughn.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its passage, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
