RESOLUTION NO. R98-1316

A resolution honoring the Reverend and Mrs. R. Eugene Waddell on the occasion of their retirement and for their service and leadership.

WHEREAS, the Reverend R. Eugene Waddell, the General Director of the Board of Foreign Missions of the National Association of Free Will Baptists, will retire from that position on December 31, 1998, after nearly fifty years of leadership in his church, his community, and around the world; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Genevieve J. Waddell has been Reverend Waddell’s bride and helpmate for over thirty-five years, while raising six children and maintaining her own career as a journalist, teacher, professor, and a member of Mayor Richard Fulton’s staff; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Waddell became an ordained minister in 1952 and has pastored churches in South Carolina, Virginia, North Carolina, and Nashville, and was the founding editor of the Free Will Baptist Witness Newspaper; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Waddle, during his long and distinguished service with the Board of Foreign Missions has proclaimed the Gospel in over a dozen countries on five continents; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Waddell has taught in Nashville’s public schools, Volunteer State Community College, and the Free Will Baptist Bible College; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Waddell helped establish the "Join Hands With The Badge" program, helped establish the Mayor’s Office for Handicapped Persons, served as a member of President Jimmy Carter’s Committee for Handicapped Persons, and served as Officer of Elections for a number of years n Nashville.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as honoring the Reverend and Mrs. R. Eugene Waddell and officially commending them for their solid service to Nashville and Davidson County, to Tennessee, to the Nation, and to men, women, and children around the world.

SECTION 2. That the Reverend and Mrs. R. Eugene Waddell be extended, on behalf of the citizens of Nashville and Davidson County, heartfelt appreciation for their lifetime of service to God’s work and to their community.

SECTION 3. That an appropriate scroll be prepared to be presented to the Reverend and Mrs. R. Eugene Waddell.

SECTION 4. That this Resolution be spread upon the minutes of the Metropolitan Council as a permanent record.

SECTION 5. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
