ADOPTED 10/20/1998

RESOLUTION NO. R98-1307

A resolution requesting the Davidson County Delegation to the Tennessee General Assembly to introduce and have enacted legislation amending Chapter 4 of Title 7 of the Tennessee Code Annotated to permit an increase of the tourism accommodation tax of an additional 1% to be allocated for direct promotion of tourism.

WHEREAS, the tourist accommodation tax authorized by Chapter 4 of Title 7 of Tennessee Code Annotated presently permits the Metropolitan Government to impose a 4% tax on the privilege of occupying a room in any hotel or motel; and

WHEREAS, this tax is presently equally divided between the direct promotion of tourism, tourism-related activities, the general fund, and for the benefit of the Metropolitan Convention Center; and

WHEREAS, the recent reduction in tourism and hotel occupancy has resulted in a decrease of receipts of the tourist accommodation tax; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper to increase the tourist accommodation tax to provide additional funding to promote tourism to enhance Nashville as a tourist destination city; and

WHEREAS, an increase to 5% will not be out of proportion to similar tourism accommodation taxes that are imposed in similar tourist destination cities.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Davidson County Delegation to the Tennessee General Assembly to introduce and have enacted legislation amending Chapter 4 of Title 7 of the Tennessee Code Annotated to permit an increase of the tourist accommodation tax of an additional 1% to be allocated to direct promotion of tourism.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to each member of the Davidson County Delegation.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
