RESOLUTION NO. R98-1306

A resolution requesting the Metropolitan Board of Public Education to name one of the proposed new schools after William Henry Oliver.

Whereas, William Henry Oliver was a respected teacher, principal and administrator; and

WHEREAS, William Henry Oliver was a teacher for seven years at East High School, and served as Principal of East High School for eighteen years; and

WHREAS, William Henry Oliver served as the City School Superintendent for the Nashville Board of Public Education from 1957 until 1963; and

WHEREAS, after retiring from the public school system, William Henry Oliver taught at Belmont College and at Freewill Baptist Bible College in Nashville; and

WHEREAS, William Henry Oliver was noted for his strength of character, congeniality, compassion, and was noted for not teaching citizenship to his students, but instilling citizenship in students.

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that William Henry Oliver be remembered by naming one of the proposed new public schools after him.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Metropolitan Board of Public Education to name one of the proposed new public schools after William Henry Oliver.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to each member of the Metropolitan Board of Public Education.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
