RESOLUTION NO. R98-1137
A RESOLUTION REQUESTING THE DAVIDSON COUNTY DELEGATION TO THE TENNESSEE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO ENACT STATE LEGISLATION THAT WOULD PERMIT METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT TO WAIVE THE TOURIST ACCOMMODATION TAX ON THE RED CROSS AND OTHER NOT-FOR-PROFIT DISASTER RELIEF AGENCIES DURING TIMES OF NATURAL DISASTERS.
WHEREAS, Chapter 4 of Title 7 of the Tennessee Code Annotated permits Metropolitan Government to impose a 4% tourist accommodation tax on hotel and motel room charges; and
WHEREAS, during times of emergencies following natural disasters such as the recent tornado and storm that occurred on April 16, 1998, it would be appropriate not to charge an accommodation tax for not-for-profit agencies such as the Red Cross that are providing relief and other emergency services.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Davidson County Delegation to the Tennessee General Assembly to enact State legislation that would permit Metropolitan Government to waive the tourist accommodation tax on the Red Cross and other not-for-profit disaster relief agencies during times of natural disasters.
SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is requested to send a certified copy of the Resolution to each member of the Davidson County Delegation to the Tennessee General Assembly.
SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
