ORDINANCE BL2017-909

An ordinance providing the honorary designation of “Bridgestone Drive” for a portion of 4th Avenue South.

WHEREAS, Ordinance No. BL2012-262 amended Chapter 13.08 of the Metropolitan Code to permit the use of honorary street names and signs without amending the Official Street and Alley Acceptance and Maintenance Map for The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, and without requiring residents and businesses to change their address; and

WHEREAS, Bridgestone Americas, Inc. commissioned the construction of its new headquarters facility, representing an investment well above $200 million, at the intersection of Fourth Avenue and Demonbreun Street; and

WHEREAS, Bridgestone Americas, Inc. plays a vital and valued role within the city, employing over 1700 teammates in its downtown headquarters building alone and over 2200 in the metropolitan area, providing over $240 million in salaries to its employees living within the metropolitan area annually, contributing over $1.4 million per year in cash and in-kind contributions to worthy charitable partners, supporting local businesses, events and ventures through purchases, advertising spending and sponsorships – including the United Way of Metropolitan Nashville and the naming rights to Bridgestone Arena, and encouraging its employees in their efforts to donate to, volunteer for, and serve on the boards of local charities and nonprofit organizations; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of the significant contribution that this business has played and will continue to play in the City it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council provide an honorary street name of “Bridgestone Drive” for 4th Avenue South between Broadway and Korean Veterans Blvd.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ENACTED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That 4th Avenue South between Broadway and Korean Veterans Blvd, all of which is more particularly described by lines, words and figures on the sketch which is attached hereto as Exhibit A and made a part of this Ordinance as though copied herein, is hereby given the honorary street name “Bridgestone Drive”.

Section 2. This honorary street designation shall not require businesses and residents located on 4th Avenue South to change their street address.

Section 3. The Department of Public Works is hereby authorized and directed, upon the enactment and approval of this Ordinance, to install the appropriate signage designating this section of roadway as “Bridgestone Drive” in accordance with § 13.08.025 of the Metropolitan Code.

Section 4. This Ordinance shall take effect immediately after its passage, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.

AMENDMENT NO. 1
TO
ORDINANCE NO. BL2017-909

 

Mr. President –

I move to amend Ordinance No. BL2017-909 as follows:

I. By amending Section 3 by deleting it in its entirety and substituting therefore the following:

Section 3. The Department of Public Works is hereby authorized and directed, upon the enactment and approval of this Ordinance, to install the appropriate signage designating this section of roadway as “Bridgestone Drive” in accordance with § 13.08.025 of the Metropolitan Code  and to allow no more than three honorary street signs to be placed on the road, with signs being placed at the following three intersections: Broadway, Demonbreun and Korean Veterans Blvd.
