ORDINANCE NO. BL2013-404
An ordinance providing the honorary designation of “Frank Rudy Memorial Road” for a portion of Music Valley Drive.
WHEREAS, Ordinance No. BL2012-262 amended Chapter 13.08 of the Metropolitan Code to permit the use of honorary street names and signs without amending the Official Street and Alley Acceptance and Maintenance Map for The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, and without requiring residents and businesses to change their address; and
WHEREAS, Joseph Cleese and his brother Frank Cleese purchased approximately 500 acres of property in the Pennington Bend area in 1881; and
WHEREAS, Frank Cleese died in 1913 and willed the property to Joseph Cleese’s daughters: Mary, Susie, and Katherine; and
WHEREAS, Katherine Cleese married and had four children: Mary, Frank, Louise, and Dan Rudy; and
WHEREAS, Frank Rudy (1913-1981) farmed 1,650 acres in the Pennington Bend area raising livestock and crops, and operated a sawmill on the current Opryland Hotel property; and
WHEREAS, in the late 1930s, Frank and his brother Dan Rudy began to modernize a family sausage business that dated back to the 1880s. The business, known as Rudy’s Farm Sausage, was located in the Music Valley Drive area and was the first plant of its kind built to meet U.S. Government inspection standards. The business was eventually sold to Consolidated Foods; and
WHEREAS, Frank Rudy married Oleda Miller and built a home place on Pennington Bend next to Pennington Methodist Church where they raised their four children; and
WHEREAS, Frank Rudy was a well-respected businessman and was very active in the community, both civically and politically; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of the significant contribution Frank Rudy made to the Pennington Bend area, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council provide an honorary street name of “Frank Rudy Memorial Road” for Music Valley Drive between Rudy Circle and Pennington Bend Road.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ENACTED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. That Music Valley Drive from Rudy Circle to its terminus at Pennington Bend Road, all of which is more particularly described by lines, words and figures on the sketch which is attached hereto as Exhibit A and made a part of this Ordinance as though copied herein, is hereby given the honorary street name “Frank Rudy Memorial Road”.
Section 2. This honorary street designation shall not require businesses and residents located on Music Valley Drive to change their street address.
Section 3. The Department of Public Works is hereby authorized and directed, upon the enactment and approval of this Ordinance, to install the appropriate signage designating this section of roadway as “Frank Rudy Memorial Road” in accordance with § 13.08.025 of the Metropolitan Code.
Section 4. This Ordinance shall take effect immediately after its passage, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
