ORDINANCE NO. BL2012-217

An ordinance naming the West Police Precinct in honor of Chief Joe Casey.

WHEREAS, Joe Casey joined the Nashville police force in 1951, and served as Chief of Police from 1973 until his retirement in 1989; and

WHEREAS, Chief Casey was very active in professional organizations, serving seven times as president of the Tennessee Association of Chiefs of Police, as well as past president of the International Association of Chiefs of Police; and

WHEREAS, after graduating from North High School in Nashville in 1946, where he lettered in six sports, Joe Casey played for the Nashville Vols, a professional basketball team in the Southern Basketball League in the late 1940s; and

WHEREAS, Joe Casey served 24 seasons as a high school basketball official, and was inducted into the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) Hall of Fame in 2008 and the Public Schools Hall of Fame in 2012; and

WHEREAS, § 13.26.010 of the Metropolitan Code provides that no building or structure of the Metropolitan Government may be named except pursuant to an ordinance duly adopted by the Metropolitan County Council; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the new West Police Precinct facility be named in honor of Chief Casey, who made such a significant contribution to the Metropolitan Police Department.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ENACTED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the West Police Precinct located at 5500 Charlotte Pike is hereby named "Chief Joe Casey Precinct”.

Section 2. This Ordinance shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.

Ordinance No. BL2012-217

Madam President:

I move to amend Ordinance No. BL2012-217 by deleting Section 1 in its entirety and substituting in lieu thereof the following new Section 1:
“Section 1. That the West Police Precinct building located at 5500 Charlotte Pike is hereby named the ‘Chief Joe D. Casey Building’.”
