ORDINANCE NO. BL2012-128

An ordinance naming the Metropolitan Police Gun Range in honor of Major Tom Dozier.

WHEREAS, Thomas Alvine Dozier, Sr. served the citizens of Nashville as a police officer for 50 years; and

WHEREAS, Thomas Alvine Dozier, Sr. began his law enforcement career in 1953 as a patrolman in the Nashville Police Department, and after steadily rising through the ranks, was promoted to the rank of Major in the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department in 1990; and

WHEREAS, For much of his MNPD career, Major Dozier was an instructor at the police academy; and

WHEREAS, Major Dozier also served as the Director of Training, head of firearms, and was a SWAT team commander; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Police Gun Range located at 2715 Tucker Road was constructed in approximately 1975, after being housed inside the former police headquarters building; and

WHEREAS, Major Dozier was instrumental in the construction of the outdoor Gun Range and served as the supervisor of the Gun Range for many years, which ensured its continued operation and success; and

WHEREAS, Major Dozier retired from the Police Department on January 1, 2004, and passed away on August 2, 2011, at the age of 81; and

WHEREAS, § 13.26.010 of the Metropolitan Code provides that no building or structure of the metropolitan government may be named except pursuant to an ordinance duly adopted by the metropolitan county council.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ENACTED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the new Metropolitan Police Gun Range located at 2715 Tucker Road is hereby named the "Major Tom Dozier Gun Range”.

Section 2. This Ordinance shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
