ORDINANCE NO. BL2011-57

An ordinance naming the Madison Police Precinct in honor of Officer Paul Scurry.

WHEREAS, Officer Paul Scurry gave his life in the line-of-duty while protecting the citizens of Nashville and Davidson County; and

WHEREAS, Officer Scurry served as a Metropolitan police officer from 1975 until his death in 1996, spending his entire career working out of the East Sector; and

WHEREAS, Officer Scurry served as a Master Patrol Officer, providing field training to new officers, from 1983 to 1991; and

WHEREAS, Officer Scurry was shot and killed in the line of duty on May 17, 1996, while attempting to arrest a fugitive at River Retreat Apartments on Cheyenne Boulevard in Madison; and

WHEREAS, at the time of his death, Officer Scurry was 48 years old and a 21-year veteran of the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department; and

WHEREAS, in recognition for giving his life in service to the citizens of Nashville, Officer Scurry was posthumously awarded the Medal of Valor, the Police Department’s highest honor; and

WHEREAS, as a tribute to the life and sacrifice of Officer Paul Scurry, it is fitting and proper that the new Madison Police Precinct be named in his honor.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ENACTED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the new Madison Police Precinct located at 430 Myatt Drive in Madison, Tennessee is hereby named "Officer Paul Scurry Precinct".

Section 2. This Ordinance shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
