ORDINANCE NO. BL2011-833

An ordinance naming the auditorium at the Howard Office Building in honor of Sonny West.

WHEREAS, Lon F. “Sonny” West began his career with the Davidson County Government on June 1, 1955, prior to the creation of the Metropolitan Government; and

WHEREAS, given his 55 years of service, Sonny West is the longest tenured active employee of the Metropolitan Government; and

WHEREAS, Sonny West is a graduate of Vanderbilt University School of Law, and has served as the Metro Zoning Administrator since 1986; and

WHEREAS, as Zoning Administrator, Sonny West is responsible for interpreting the Metro Zoning Code, supervising the issuance of permits, conducting zoning examinations, and maintaining public records for the Codes Department; and

WHEREAS, the Planning Commission and the Metropolitan Board of Zoning Appeals hold their meetings in the auditorium at the newly-constructed Howard Office Building; and

WHEREAS, Section 13.26.010 of the Metropolitan Code provides that no building or structure of the Metropolitan Government may be named except pursuant to an ordinance duly adopted by the Metropolitan County Council; and

WHEREAS, given the 55 years of dedicated service to the citizens of Nashville and Davidson County, it is fitting and proper that the Howard Office Building auditorium be named in honor of Sonny West.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ENACTED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the auditorium on the ground floor of the Howard Office Building located at 700 Second Avenue South is hereby named “Sonny West Auditorium”.

Section2. That the Department of General Service is directed to erect the proper signage designating the Howard Office Building auditorium as “Sonny West Auditorium”.

Section 3. This Ordinance shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.

Madam President:

I move to amend Ordinance No. BL2011-833 by deleting the name “Sonny West Auditorium”, wherein it appears in Section 1 and Section 2, and substituting with the name “Sonny West Conference Center”.
