ORDINANCE NO. BL2008-129

An ordinance to amend the Official Street and Alley Acceptance and Maintenance Map for The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, by renaming 8th Avenue North, between Charlotte Avenue and Church Street, as “Rosa L. Parks Boulevard” (Proposal No. 2008M-010U-9).

WHEREAS, Rosa L. Parks fought tirelessly throughout her life for the civil rights of minorities in this country; and

WHEREAS, as a means to honor the vital contributions Rosa Parks made to the Civil Rights movement in the United States and Tennessee, the Tennessee General Assembly renamed a four-mile portion of U.S. Highway 41-A, which includes part of 8th Avenue North, as "Rosa L. Parks Boulevard"; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council deems it appropriate that the portion of 8th Avenue North between Charlotte Avenue and Church Street be renamed “Rosa L. Parks Boulevard”, as well.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ENACTED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Official Street and Alley Acceptance and Maintenance Map for The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, as enacted by Ordinance No. 2007-77, be and is hereby amended, as follows:

8th Avenue North, between Charlotte Avenue and Church Street, is hereby renamed “Rosa L. Parks Boulevard”, all of which is more particularly described by lines, words and figures on the sketch which is attached hereto and made a part of this Ordinance as though copied herein.

Section 2. BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That the Director of the Department of Public Works be and is hereby authorized and directed, upon the enactment and approval of this Ordinance, to cause said change to be made on said Map as set out in Section 1 of this ordinance, and to make notation thereon of reference to the date of passage and approval of this amendatory Ordinance.

Section 3. BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, that this Ordinance shall take effect immediately after its passage, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.

Madam President:

I move to amend Ordinance No. BL2008-129 by deleting the phrase “Rosa L. Parks Boulevard”, wherein it appears in Section 1, and substituting in lieu thereof the phrase “Rosa L. Parks Avenue”.
